Culture Shock

Where do you go to take in culture ?

NEW YORK:  The New Museum on Bowery

This building has seven floors to discover.  Unfortunately 2 floors were not open when we went.  The fourth floor has a human tube slide that you can take wipping you through two floors.  You must wear an helmet and sign a waiver to do so.  This museum is very unique.  Worth taking a look.  You can ride a mirrored carousel or even wear upside down googles while you are there but make sure not to take the stairs while wearing them !

PARIS:  The Louvre extends nearly two miles along the riverbank covering 40 acres.  This monumental structure houses 400,000 pieces of priceless art expanding over centuries.

The Louvre is where Mona Lisa, their coveted pride and joy lives.  Painted by Leonardo da Vinci 1452-1519.  She is definitely one of the more popular pieces to visit judging by the giant crowd around her.  She is actually quite small.

The Winged Victory of Samothrace or the Nike of Samothrace is second century BC made of marble.  Since 1884 it has been prominently displayed at the Louvre and is one of the most celebrated sculptures in the world.

Mercury and Psyche by Adriaen De Vries 1593

I found this great contemporary artist’s work in a photo that was sold in the Louvre gift shop.  Her name is Jenny Holzer.  The main focus of her work is the use of words and ideas in a public place.  Originally utilizing street posters, LED signs became her most visible medium, though her diverse practice incorporates a wide array of media including bronze plaques, painted signs, stone benches and footstools, stickers, T-shirts, condoms, paintings, photographs, sound, video, light projection and the internet.  I particularly liked this piece because of how amazing it looks projected on the glass pyramid of the Louvre.
